"The path into solitary confinement is wide for this reason. We have to many laws and send to many people to prison these days. It used to be, in the 1980's, that you only went to prison for murder, rape and robbery for the most part. Tough on crime political platforms and the drug war took over and now we are paying the price with a prison population that is exploding at the seams.

To expand further, now that we send people to prison for poverty crimes like stealing to survive "Petty theft", and not being able to pay for probationary costs, and for being addicted to drugs, we have an overburdened prison system that frankly, has a lot of mental issues. Imagine being in prison as a drug addict or an orphan of poverty, on a packed prison yard, where the inmates are comprised of every race, color and creed. Now mix in hundreds of different street gangs and some predators. But please don't forget to add in a percentage of outright mental cases. Add all of that up and you have a recipe for violence, the slippery slope into solitary. This is where you have to look deeper. As an inmate trying to fit in, and avoid that violence in a predatory environment, one of the easiest masks to put on is in the form of tattoos. Human beings often enter the prison system as innocent, young drug addicts, and out of fear, try to fit in by blasting their bodies with ink to look formidable. This is the main reason that the path out of solitary is narrow. Since the path into solitary confinement and the path out aren't regulated by a court of law, dubious evidence is used that has to do with certain tattoos meaning certain things. Other dubious evidence is second hand information from other prisoners, and the one that hurts my heart the most, self admission.

What most people don't understand is that as a new arrival to a prison, the prison administration has to run a check to clear the inmate for mainline population on the "Big Yard". During this process the inmate is under the microscope like an insect under a magnifying glass. He or she is asked questions like, 'What gang do you run with? What do they call you? Do you have any enemies?' These questions make a new inmate feel like joining a gang is the answer! A great percentage of lost misfits pass the tipping point and claim something. In my case being a White inmate they asked, 'Are you a peckerwood or skin head?' I saw the verbal bait on a hook and responded, can't I just be a White man without any affiliation? For those who take the bait and claim where they're from in the form of initials to their county like S.J.C, for San Juan Capistrano, just gave someone's pen the power to keep them self in solitary forever.

Who Are The Real Victims? By Glenn Langohr. On my wordpress site I asked, "Who are the real criminals?" Now I'm changing the context to victims. Maybe it's more compassionate.

Yesterday I had the opportunity to speak to 20 kids on probation about drug addiction, gang life and prison time. When I got out of prison in 2008 on drug charges I started going to A.A. I met my sponsor, Mr. Phillip Doran and worked the 12 steps. I was selfish but real about it. While in prison in solitary confinement I spent 10 hours a day writing Roll Call, a drug war novel. Phillip Doran is a prolific writer and one of the ex producers of many hit TV shows. I told him I wanted him to help me take over Hollywood. Okay, I am a little vain. After working the steps, Phillip read all of my prison books and reviewed them. He also helps me with marketing.

Part of the 12 steps is giving back to newcomers in sobriety, hence we spoke to the kids in trouble at probation. While speaking to the kids I couldn't help but see them as victims. Kids from broken homes. Kids who are so hyper sensitive they become their own victims. Both Phillip and I shared our story of hope and inspiration. I told them, "God loves you." and gave out my number to one of the kids. We'll see if he calls and I get the chance to sponsor him.

The first thing I noticed about the book is the length, Wow 734 pages, I did think I was going to be reading it for weeks as it has got to be the longest book I have read to date.
I infact finished reading this after around 14 hours. This 14 hours did take a week though as I read for a couple of hours before going to sleep.

There was drug cartels, violence, underhand police, crime and it all was very believable, Yes I know its a true story but sometimes truth does not always sound believable.
It seemed that a certain detective would try to bust B.J for just breathing and was on his back all the time trying to stitch him up even when B.J went legit. I really felt for him as I could see all he wanted to do was put the drugs behind him and start over. Which I guess would be pretty difficult when he is being hounded all of the time with drugs raids and the likes for no reason at all.

Prison life sounds as I had thought it would be but the story differed slightly from my own perception, I think it is probably because I can be a little naïve as I have never been in trouble myself so just go by TV programmes of what prison life and prison officers are like.

Roll Call is a fantastic and insightful read. It was very well written and it has left me wanting to know the rest of the story so I will be reading Upon Release very soon.

The students in Professor Keramet's class were required to read an excerpt from Glenn's book Underdog. In Underdog, Glenn compares dogs in a cage with humans in the same cages and points out that our nation has more compassion for the dogs. Glenn also shows how the process to get in to solitary and out of solitary is in the hands of prison officials in California, not courts.

It is awesome to see the prisoners respond this way. Not all prisoners are murderers. 70% of California's prison inmates are there for drug crimes and poverty crimes. They are rehabilitating themselves by forming together and fighting for a common cause.
