As I move towards middle age, I have become more and more perplexed with the world that I live in.
A world that from the start of my youth began as a crystal clear vision of harmony, peace and love that was shown to me from the folks that I grew up with - the friends and family who showed me a much simpler and easier way of life but in truth, represented a shield of sorts that sheltered me from the realties of what it meant to grow up poor & from humble beginnings that for the most part, confused me because I grew up thinking in terms of black and white all the while not realizing that a multitude of grey existence lay waiting for thousands and thousands of young men and women that would soon face the reality I now come to understand as the American Prison System.
"UNDERDOG, A True Crime Thriller of Prison Life: Prison Killers 4", written by Glen Thomas Langohr presents a visceral description of that world and what it takes to survive. This book is far from fiction but rather a direct personal experience of the Author who spend over ten years in the State of California Prison System.
Without giving away too much detail, what I can say about the book is that it hits you right in the gut as you read for example about the politics, the gang wars and most horrific of all, solitary life in a Super Max Prison where inmates can literally spend DECADES in solitary confinement, most often at the hands of corrupt Correctional Officers who are motivated by the prison's financial gain as the prisons that are being built require more and more bodies to fill them.
The author also speaks on the Hunger Strikes that are now taking place across the prisons in California in protest of the horrible conditions that the inmates face in addition to having no limit as to how much time an inmate can serve in solitary confinement of which in my view is inhuman, barbaric and straight out evil.
America is most often referred to as a Civilized country but yet our prisons reflect a different reality of which decency and respect is absent and in its place is indifference, human slavery and the supported and sanctioned racism of which prisoners are then divided up by race . . and region.
Though I am fully aware of the Author's established faith of which through his higher power, he has managed to completely turn his life around, I can't help but feel that as long as *MONEY* is involved which drives the passing of laws designed to incarcerate, the building of new prisons regardless of type (Federal, State and Private) in addition to the failed war on drugs which continues to lock good people up by the thousands, we will continue to see the rise of the Private Prison Industry of which already, outfits like Corrections Corporation of America (currently trading at $34/share), are lobbying at the halls of Congress more than they ever have before. This all ties in of course to the militarization of the police and the emerging police state that will soon turn this country into one gigantic prison.
Will we see sanity and true prison reform take place in this country? I'm highly doubtful but until that day comes, we must look to Good Men like Glen Langohr who are not afraid to stand up and be counted as the true prophets & seers of our times.

Glenn Langohr Spoke To The Orange County Performing Arts Group About His Best Selling Prison Books
After being featured in the Orange County Register on the front page, Mel Menifee from the Cabaret Division of the Performing Arts in Orange County contacted Glenn to speak to their civic group.
After speaking to Mel on the phone, Glenn researched their website. “I couldn’t believe what a perfect fit it was. Their mission statement, ‘Through art, we believe cultural, racial and poverty divides can be broken down”, is what I also passionately believe.
A few minutes into the speech, Glenn said, “I’m a best seller in the Kindle store on Amazon, but I need you guys to get me on TV, preferably the Oprah Winfrey channel so I can be a best seller in print as well!”
Glenn explained how he started writing redemptive drug war and prison books from a cell in solitary confinement after running away from home as a 12 year old kid, “The law started catching up with me at 18 years old for selling marijuana.”
Glenn went on to meet a meth dealer and started using the drug in hopes of being able to make all the money back law enforcement seized from him. He says, “I was stuck in a cycle of trying to make enough money to feel like I could quit the business.”
Glenn explained, “I love to speak at colleges to Criminal Justice classes at Universities as a guest Lecturer and expert on the drug war and prison culture. I also hope to speak to kids in High Schools about the dangers of using drugs.”

I met Steve in a northern California prison and immediately called him "Giant". As with most prisons, the White inmates were heavily outnumbered. Giant was similar to me and most prisoners, he was doing his time for drug related charges. In both of our cases, we were addicted to the power that being a drug supplier brought. Thank God we outgrew that. I turned into a writer and philanthropist and Giant turned into a hooker. Just kidding, he turned into a prolific artist and mentor to wayward kids. Both Giant and I did our time by working out a lot and playing handball and basketball. Those areas on the yard were heavily regulated by the Black inmates and the northern California Mexican inmates and we didn't have much airspace. Glenn Langohr started solitary confinement in the county jail in the modules where inmates only come out of there cells for 2 hours a day. In prison he was sent to solitary for riots and investigations. He states, "It is very hard to avoid any violence in prison where the isn't much rehabilitation. People with mental issues, drug and alcohol issues interact with gangs and people just trying to survive and the ingredients are toxic. In prison every inch of space is decided over and often fought over, like who can use which tables, showers, space on the yard, work out bars etc."

Who Are The Real Victims? By Glenn Langohr. On my wordpress site I asked, "Who are the real criminals?" Now I'm changing the context to victims. Maybe it's more compassionate.
Yesterday I had the opportunity to speak to 20 kids on probation about drug addiction, gang life and prison time. When I got out of prison in 2008 on drug charges I started going to A.A. I met my sponsor, Mr. Phillip Doran and worked the 12 steps. I was selfish but real about it. While in prison in solitary confinement I spent 10 hours a day writing Roll Call, a drug war novel. Phillip Doran is a prolific writer and one of the ex producers of many hit TV shows. I told him I wanted him to help me take over Hollywood. Okay, I am a little vain. After working the steps, Phillip read all of my prison books and reviewed them. He also helps me with marketing.
Part of the 12 steps is giving back to newcomers in sobriety, hence we spoke to the kids in trouble at probation. While speaking to the kids I couldn't help but see them as victims. Kids from broken homes. Kids who are so hyper sensitive they become their own victims. Both Phillip and I shared our story of hope and inspiration. I told them, "God loves you." and gave out my number to one of the kids. We'll see if he calls and I get the chance to sponsor him.

The students in Professor Keramet's class were required to read an excerpt from Glenn's book Underdog. In Underdog, Glenn compares dogs in a cage with humans in the same cages and points out that our nation has more compassion for the dogs. Glenn also shows how the process to get in to solitary and out of solitary is in the hands of prison officials in California, not courts.
